Developing the Museum’s Kodak Document Collection

History & Technology: Short term

Completed

Project Objectives

This project has two main aims - to research the Kodak company’s history in Australia; and to sort, select and describe documents from the Kodak Collection relating to Kodak’s history in Australia, including its precursor Baker & Rouse.

Project Description

In 2005 Museum Victoria acquired a large collection of objects, documents and images from Kodak which trace its history back to the late nineteenth century to the company’s Australian precursor, Baker & Rouse. The documents are currently unregistered, and in order to develop them into meaningful resource will require sorting, listing and a significance statement written in preparation for registration.

This project will take place at the Moreland collection store, and will involve assisting the curator and a volunteer team to extract, sort, re-house and list the Kodak document collection from its current storage system. Research into specific elements of the company’s history will be also undertaken and assistance given with writing a significance statement.

The Kodak document collection includes items relating to the company’s staff, financial dealings, sales and promotion, and production. For example, share certificates, correspondence, technical manuals, news clippings, ledgers, sales brochures, legal documents etc.

Project Outcomes

The student will participate in regular hands-on collection work with the project team, and will assist with producing a collection listing, description and significance statement.

Student Knowledge & Skills

The student should be undertaking a relevant degree in history, museum studies/art curatorship, or related heritage studies; have some research experience and a desire to engage with material culture.
