Developing the Museum’s Kodak Image Collection

History & Technology: Short term

Completed

Project Objectives

This project aims to sort, select, list re-house and describe images from the Kodak Collection relating to Kodak’s history in Australia, including its precursor Baker & Rouse.

Project Description

In 2005 Museum Victoria acquired a large collection of objects, documents and images from Kodak which trace its history back to the late nineteenth century to the company’s Australian precursor, Baker & Rouse. The images are currently unregistered, and in order to develop them into meaningful resource will require sorting, listing, re-housing, and a significance statement written in preparation for registration.

This project will take place at the Moreland collection store, and will involve assisting the curator and a volunteer team to extract, sort, re-house and list the Kodak image collection from its current storage system.

The Kodak image collection includes several thousand images relating to the company’s staff, sales and promotion, infrastructure, and production.

Project Outcomes

The student will participate in regular hands-on collection work with the project team, and will assist with producing a collection listing, description and significance statement.

Student Knowledge & Skills

The student should be undertaking a relevant degree in history, museum studies/art curatorship, conservation, or related heritage studies; have some experience in handling objects, in particular images, a desire to engage with material culture, and an interest in the history of photography.
