Migrant Women and the Post-war Melbourne Textile & Clothing Industry

Research documenting the experiences of migrant women who found work in Melbourne’s textile industry from the 1960s-1980s. Drawing upon oral testimony and archival records, this study explores broader themes relating to post-war industrialization, trade unionism and the evolution of Melbourne’s fashion industry through migrant labor. It also assists to contextualize existing museum collections such as Gloweave and an Italian outworker knitting machine; the oral history collection will be deposited into the museum’s oral history archive.
