The department's research directions aim to increase understanding of:
- The cultural needs and aspirations of Indigenous peoples, particularly in Australia and the Pacific;
- The histories and cultures of indigenous peoples, particularly in Australia and the Pacific through anthropological, archaeological, historical, oral history and material culture analyses.
