In the 1880s, museum director Charles Frederick McCoy began production of his famous Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria, and Museum Victoria has continued to promote its research and collections through the publication of high-quality books since that time. Monographs, collected essays, field guides and exhibition catalogues are some of the formats the museum produces across a range of subjects, including natural history, indigenous art and history. Both the specialist researcher and the ordinary reader will find something of interest in the list of museum publications.
Forthcoming Titles
In 2009, the museum will publish four more titles in its terrific marine field guide series: Barnacles; Shrimps, prawns and lobsters; Sponges; and Nudibranchs, sea hares and bubble shells. This series is popular with both the diving and beach-combing public, as well as specialists. Prehistoric giants: the megafauna of Australia—the second title in the Nature Victoria series—will also be published, providing a wonderful insight into the terrifying landscape of Australia during the Pleistocene. A new edition of the best-selling title Phar Lap:A True Legend will also be released; it will include the most recent scientific discoveries relating to the great champion’s early death.
