On 21 November Melbourne’s Immigration Museum was recognised as Winner of the Heritage and Cultural Tourism category at the 2005 Victorian Tourism Awards, confirming its place as one of the best tourism experiences statewide.

Cited for excellence in fostering a greater understanding of and participation in history, heritage and culture, the Museum was inducted into the Tourism Awards Hall of Fame, for winning its category in three successive years.

The Museum is now eligible for judging in the 2005-2006 Australian Tourism Awards, after winning the 2004-2005 national award earlier this year.

‘It is fantastic that the Immigration Museum’s vital contribution has been recognised in this way, now for the third year in a row,’ commented the Museum’s Manager, Padmini Sebastian.

‘Since opening in November 1998, the Museum has brought Victoria’s immigration history to life – through sharing the stories of Victorians and Australians who have made the journey from all over the world to start a new life in Australia.’

Located in Old Customs House, one of Melbourne’s finest 19th-century buildings, the Immigration Museum has established itself nationally and internationally as a dynamic living cultural centre.
