Museum Victoria has unveiled its latest website, developed in collaboration with the Fiji Museum.
Fiji’s Treasured Culture was launched on Thursday 26 May at the Fiji Museum, Suva. Amongst those present were Museum Victoria’s Dr Mike Green (Head of Indigenous Cultures) and Dr Ron Vanderwal (Senior Curator Oceania, project leader), along with Fiji Museum’s director, Ms Sagale Buadromo.
Highlighting Museum Victoria’s world class Fijian collection, the new site provides intriguing glimpses of ancient Pacific culture and Fiji’s fascinating past. Historical images provided from Fiji Museum’s impressive collection add cultural and historical meaning to the objects displayed.
On-screen icons representing cultural aspects such as dress & adornment, ritual & religion and wealth & status provide a straightforward means of site navigation. Smaller icons featuring individual objects and photographs lead the user along multiple paths through the site’s content, encouraging exploration.
The result is a series of fascinating journeys through various aspects of Fiji’s past, many of which can be seen reflected in the Fiji of today - such as the use of kava in ceremonial and social contexts, the manufacture of bark cloth, and colourful baskets modelled on those of yesteryear.
