Melbourne Planetarium gets new equipment upgrade.
The Planetarium’s recent $1.5 million equipment upgrade was unveiled last week by the Honourable Mary Delahunty, Arts Minister.
A special preview of both the equipment and the new Planetarium show The Search For Life: Are We Alone? was held for media, sponsors and stakeholders on Wednesday 15 June.
Supported by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria’s Asset Management Fund, the upgrade saw the removal of the previous combination of digital-mechanical equipment and the installation of a completely digital, full-dome video projection system.
The new system blankets the Planetarium’s hemispherical dome with a single, seamless, super high resolution video image, resulting in spectacular colour and movement like never before.
‘We are really excited about the Planetarium’s upgrade and giving visitors the chance to have an even greater immersive and spectacular astronomical experience,’ said Dr Tanya Hill, Museum Victoria Astronomy Curator.
The new show The Search For Life: Are We Alone? is a breathtaking production exploring the possibility of life beyond Earth. Narrated by Harrison Ford, it was produced by the American Museum of Natural History in collaboration with NASA. For session times, visit Melbourne Planetarium.
The Planetarium upgrade and new show has been featured in various media including Channel 7, Channel 9, Herald Sun, Sunday Magazine, The Age Metro and many Western and suburban newspapers/
