Tram from Opening Ceremony now on display at Melbourne Museum.

Media were invited to witness the final installation of the flying tram from the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, at Melbourne Museum this morning.

Weighing 1.7 tonnes, the 12m long tram was transferred from the MCG to Melbourne Museum immediately after the Ceremony’s conclusion. Museum staff worked around the clock to ensure it was available for viewing by visitors, less than 12 hours after being seen by a worldwide television audience of millions.

The tram has been installed in preparation for Spirit of the Games, an exhibition which reveals the secrets behind the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.

This spectacular exhibition, showcasing props, costumes, lighting, never-before-seen footage, music and icons from the Ceremony, will be on display at Melbourne Museum from 18 March.

Media who attended the photo opportunity included Channels 7 and 10, ABC, The Age and AAP.
