The Immigration Museum was recently invited to an international expert meeting convened in Rome by UNESCO and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Padmini Sebastian, Manager, Immigration Museum, attended as one of 30 representatives from migration museums and cultural centres worldwide. There she presented a paper on the Museum's work in developing exhibitions and events with Melbourne's culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Assembled to discuss "The role of migration museums in cultural diversity and migrant integration", the meeting established an ongoing international network, which will foster the sharing of experiences, content and good practice between host countries.

Padmini's presentation, "Mobilising communities and sharing stories: the role of the Immigration Museum in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world", will be published by Museum International, UNESCO's quarterly journal on museums and heritage.

It is planned to appear in a 2007 edition that will coincide with the opening of the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration in Paris.
