Melbourne isn’t the only city to have been buffed and polished for the Commonwealth Games.

Nitty Gritty Super City at Scienceworks has been renewed and looks better than ever. Now younger Scienceworks visitors can learn even more about the world around them in this fun and interactive exhibition.

The exhibition was officially launched on Tuesday 28 March by Mike Larkan, Network Ten weather presenter, who features in the updated weather interactive.

Nitty Gritty Super City replaces the extremely popular existing exhibition at Scienceworks, which has captured the imagination of Scienceworks’ younger visitors for the past ten years.

Specifically designed for three to eight year olds, Nitty Gritty Super City encourages early childhood development and learning. The refurbished exhibition is a fun, active and energised space where visitors bring their own experiences of the urban environment and learn more about the science and technology of the city and how things work.

Set in a mini-metropolis, the exhibition encourages visitors to push buttons, pull ropes, investigate materials and encounter sounds, objects and other people around the exhibition.

Dr Andi Horvath, Senior Curator, Museum Victoria, said, ‘Nitty Gritty Super City introduces our younger visitors to the world that surrounds them through play and interactivity.

‘The exhibition takes on the theme of "How Cities Work" and some of the highlights include a music bowl where kids can be as noisy as they like, a recyclatron where they can learn all about waste management, a café where they can role-play together and a construction zone where they can let their imaginations run free.’
