Live Exhibits staff recently released two Eastern Yellow Robins into the Forest Gallery.

Found in the forests east of Melbourne, the Eastern Yellow Robin (Eopsaltria australis) is a species that has not been displayed before at the Museum.

The adult female and juvenile were donated by Healesville Sanctuary. Transferred early one morning from Healesville, they were placed in the Forest Gallery’s bird capture cage for approximately an hour before being released into the gallery proper. The boardwalk was also closed off for the day so they could acclimatise without undue disturbance.

Their repetitive piping notes can now be clearly heard in the gallery. A favourite of photographers, these small birds are highly inquisitive by nature and will happily perch rock-still long enough for you to whip out a camera and focus.

Make sure you keep an eye (and ear) out for these birds next time you take a wander through the Forest Gallery.
