Melbourne Museum’s foyer is now home to a striking new feature: the Welcome Map.
This massive three-dimensional map of Victoria introduces visitors to both the museum and the State of Victoria.
Developed by Museum Victoria and Melbourne-based Megafun (who created the Commonwealth Games fish on the Yarra River), the Welcome Map features 56 showcases set within a series of 4.5 metre high rectangular poles, each telling a story about a particular Victorian region.
Objects on display include the work of Museum Victoria’s Preparators, specially-commissioned Indigenous artworks and unique contributions from regional areas across the state.
'The objects and specimens aim to capture the sweep of Victorian history – from a time 150 million years ago, when small dinosaurs roamed the wet forest of what is now the Otway Ranges, through to the formation of the contemporary landscape by volcanoes,' explained John Kean, Producer, Museum Victoria.
'The selection of objects aims to stimulate discussion about what is most important and characteristic about Victoria, as well as encouraging questions as to why some subjects have been represented and others omitted,' he added. 'We welcome the debate and hope that these showcases convey some of Victoria’s significance and diversity.'
Next time you’re in the museum foyer, be sure to take the time and enjoy this unique new display.
