News from the dig!
The 2007 Dinosaur Dreaming fossil dig at Inverloch began in earnest in late January. After just over a month of digging some very interesting bones have been found so far, as well as a possible dinosaur footprint close to the dig site.
This year's dig has so far resulted in the cataloguing of over 500 fossilised bones and teeth to date, including some much sought-after Mammal material, all of which dates from the Early Cretaceous period, about 115 million years ago.
The main Dinosaur Dreaming dig site continues to prove to be productive in terms of fossil material, but Museum Victoria and Monash University staff involved in the dig have also been prospecting sites in the surrounding areas and have found some fascinating fossil crustacean burrows and at least twelve new fossil bone specimens.
Digging will continue at the site near Inverloch until 10 March, after which the valuable specimens will be brought back to Museum Victoria for preparation and close examination.
