On Tuesday 13th February, Academy Award winner John Cox officially opened How to Make a Monster - The Art and Technology of Animatronics at Scienceworks.

This much-awaited new exhibition takes the audience on an amazing journey of monster creation. It shows the skills and processes used to bring movie creatures to life, from original concept and storyboards right through to their appearance on the big screen.

Created entirely by the John Cox Creature Workshop, the exhibition’s key focus is on animatronics: those components designed and installed within the monsters to create the ‘bones’ and ‘muscles’ that bring them to life.

Highlights on display include the Abominable Snowman, gorillas from the movie George of the Jungle 2, Disney’s Inspector Gadget and the alien from Pitch Black.

Cox and his team won an Oscar for their work on the 1995 movie Babe, where they created real-life animatronic creatures including sheep and working dogs. Their Academy Award will also be on show as part of the exhibition during the month of February.
