Museum Victoria’s new-look website was officially launched at 10am today by The Honourable Bronwyn Pike, Minister for Education.
Launching the new site at Melbourne Museum, Minister Pike also met with local students from Carlton Gardens PS at the ever-popular Bugs Alive! exhibition and viewed new exhibits including The Mind and Pompeii body casts for the upcoming A Day in Pompeii.
The event also marks a milestone in the website’s popularity. One of the most-visited museum websites in Australia, up to five million visits are expected in 2007.
‘We are incredibly proud of the success of the site and expect that our new look and additional content will attract even more virtual visitors,’ said Dr Patrick Greene, CEO, Museum Victoria.
Incorporating the Museum’s new visual identity throughout, the redesigned site features consistent navigation across all MV venues, greatly improved search functionality/discoverability of online resources and a richer overall user experience, including behind-the-scenes action such as an updated live webcam of tarantula feeds at Melbourne Museum.
New education pages bring together resources and programs for teachers to use in the classroom or as part of a museum excursion.
‘Teachers and students in particular will love the changes to the site,’ said Dr Greene, ‘Whether researching a visit to one of our museums, or finding that elusive fact for an assignment on deadline, the new site is easy to use and full of amazing information.’
Each year, over 370,000 Victorian students visit the Museum Victoria venues of Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks, the Immigration Museum and IMAX Theatre Melbourne.
