Royal Women's Hospital collection now on display at Melbourne Museum.
Last year the Royal Women's Hospital celebrated its 150th birthday. Founded as a place where underprivileged women could give birth and receive proper medical and nursing attention, the hospital’s original title was the 'Melbourne Lying-In Hospital and Infirmary for Diseases of Women and Children'.
Throughout its 150 year history, the Women's has provided specialist care for women and newborn babies; sometimes based on its own ground-breaking research. Today, it’s renowned for its expertise in areas such as antenatal care, maternal and neonatal infection control, gynaecological disease diagnosis and treatment, family planning, newborn intensive care and infertility management.
As part of the celebrations a collection of historic images and objects from the Women’s has gone on display at Melbourne Museum, in the Community Collections area of Australia Gallery.
