The Festival of Italian Motorcycles, which was advertised to occur on Sunday 11th October, has been postponed until Sunday 29th November.

The museum decided to postpone the event due to the huge and unprecedented weekend crowds on the plaza due to the A Day in Pompeii exhibition.

A popular community event, the Festival of Italian Motorcycles has been held on the Melbourne Museum plaza since 2002. Support for the event has grown over the years, with over 500 motorcyclists taking part in 2008.

We look forward to hearing the roar of the engines coming up Rathdowne Street and seeing those beautiful bikes once again, just a little later than originally scheduled.

New date: Sunday 29th November 2009

Times: 10am to 2pm

Where: Melbourne Museum Plaza

Very disappointed that the Museum apparently didn't want this cultural event this year; it's rare that my family comes to the city and my daughter loved mixing a few minutes of motorcycles with several hours in the museum. Thumbs down for a remarkably poor decision. Perhaps whoever made it would please explain?

A missed cultural and community opportunity for the the City of Melbourne and the Museum Victoria notto have embraced this event.

Hi Steve and Jim, we have contacted the Melbourne Museum Manager for his comments on this decision.  When looking at the exhibitions and programs for 2010/11, it was found that there were no clear links to Museum Victoria's core business.  In previous years, the event has been linked with our programming.
