National Science Week launches on Friday 14 August with 'Hypothesis’, an evening of comedy, talk, cabaret and film at Federation Square. Among a variety of other events and activities, three of Musem Victoria's sharpest science brains will test the crowd’s ability to sort truth from fabrication in ‘Science: Fact or Fiction?!’.
The participating scientists are marine biologist Mark Norman, curator of human biology and medicine Nurin Veis, and palaeontologist Rolf Schmidt. They will take the crowd through some of the oddest, most unbelievable research they do at the museum with help from comedians Xavier Michaeledis, Tegan Higginbotham, Jason Geary and compere Rob Lloyd.
This entertaining evening invites Melbourne to consider the funny, tasty, bizarre, human and perplexing sides to science. “Science can be really weird,” says Nurin, who is looking forward to talking about her work in a very different environment. “It’s a chance to appeal to an audience we don’t ordinarily get at the museum,” she adds.
'Hypothesis' is at BMW Edge, Federation Square, from 5.30-10.00 pm. 'Science Fact or Fiction?!' will run from 8.30-9.30 pm. Admission is free and refreshments are on sale.
National Science Week runs from 15-23 August 2009 and is celebrated Australia-wide. The full schedule of activities and events is available at the website.
