De Marco Brothers Terrazzo Collection

The project aims to undertake research into the terrazzo industry in Victoria during the 1920s - 1940s, based on the collection relating to the De Marco Brothers. Data enhancement and photography of the De Marco Brothers collection will also be undertaken.

The project will require the documentation of a small collection of material used in the creation of terrazzo by the De Marco Brothers. The student will undertake research to improve the documentation of the collection, create a narrative about the De Marco Brothers and a contextual overview of the terrazzo industry, and the role of Italian migrants in it, during the 1920s - 1940s. The student will also help photograph the collection for the collection database.

The student will submit a report outlining research findings, including a history of the company and the wider social historical context. Data enhancement of the De Marco Bros collection will also be completed for publication on the museum’s Collections Online website.

The student will have the opportunity to work behind-the-scenes in a museum environment, have access to museum collections, gain an appreciation for the handling and research potential of material culture, and make contacts within the museum sector. There may also be the opportunity to undertake research with relevant community heritage organisations to improve the documentation of this collection.

The student should be undertaking a relevant degree in history, museum studies/art curatorship, libraries or related heritage studies; have some research experience and a desire to engage with material culture.
