Volunteers assist at Melbourne Museum every day that the museum is open, that is: 7 days a week, all year round except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Melbourne Museum is open between 10am-5pm. It is important to note that not every volunteer role is available every day of the week and that some roles are highly sought after and a waiting period may apply.
Roles at Melbourne Museum
Front of House
1 - Activities Assistants: Working with Education and Community Programs staff to enhance the experience of visitors on weekends and during school holidays with specially designed activities for families with children under 12 years of age. Staff and Volunteers engage with these visitors, deepening their understanding of our galleries and exhibitions. These hands-on, often craft based activities, allow children to make and keep unique creations as a memory of an immersive learning experience. Special events cater for visitors and stakeholders of all ages.
Rostered on weekends, school holidays; some special events may be on weekends or evenings.
2 - Tour Guides: Presenting tours, enabling visitors to make the most of their time at the Museums. At Melbourne Museum tours provide highlights of the building and galleries. After at least six months in an ongoing role, tour guide training may be undertaken subject to the training calendar.
Rostered 7 days
3 - Discovery Centre Assistants: Supporting the public and Museum staff who work in Museum Victoria's free public research facility at Melbourne Museum. The Discovery Centre administers all public enquiries that relate to the museum’s research and collection activities. Volunteers assist with researching answers to enquires that do not need referring to museum experts.
Rostered 7 days.
4 - Gallery Explainers: Helping visitors further understand, interpret and enjoy our galleries and touring exhibitions, including the Science and Life and The Melbourne Gallery and some temporary exhibitions in the Touring Hall.
5 - Schools Entrance/School Hosting: Working alongside Customer Service Officers to assist school groups as they arrive and get started on their visit to the museum. Shifts are on Monday - Friday, term time only. In one of the busiest of volunteering roles, school hosts work closely with Customer Service Officers to welcome students into Melbourne Museum so that teachers and students can confidently move around the museum, equipped with information to make their experience an enjoyable and smooth one.
Back of House Roles
1 – Administration: Assist with administration tasks in museum departments such as Market Research, Public Relations, Marketing, Membership and Education. Administrative tasks for volunteers include word processing, data entry, cataloguing, photocopying, filing, helping with mail-outs, or helping collate kit material.
2 - Collections and Curatorial: Some research assistance and basic collection management for staff, including curators and collection managers in the natural science and social history collection and curatorial areas. Volunteer tasks in collection or curatorial areas include research, cataloguing collection objects, administration; data entry, filing and sorting. The nature of volunteer work in these areas largely depends on the needs of the particular work area and the interests and skills of volunteers. Positions are limited in these areas and many Volunteers commence working in Education and Community Programs first.
Rostered only Monday - Friday.
Please note: Positions in Behind the Scenes departments are limited and first made available to our existing pool of volunteers.
Melbourne Museum will be recruiting ‘Front of House’ volunteers in October/November 2015.
Applications to volunteer will be open from Tuesday 1 September 2015, via this web page.
