When your grandparents were young Your grandparents were your age many years ago. A lot of things have changed in that time but many things are still the same. These photographs show some of the games and sports that were played, clothes that were in fashion, schools that children attended, toys that were given and fun that was had by children many years ago.
These photographs show classrooms of the past. Discuss what you see, for example the furniture, clothing, decoration, type of work being done, equipment, expression and manner of students or class size. Discuss what you think it would be like to be a student in a school of the past.
School sport has been a favourite part of school for many students. Look at the two high jump photographs. What differences do you see about the way the event was conducted in times past?
Two hurdles races are shown. What is used today instead of wooden poles? How are the athletes dressed differently to today?
Can you name each of the games that is being played in this set of photographs?
Look at the toys these children are playing with. Which of these toys have you played with? How are these toys different from toys given to children today?
These photographs show many of the ways children enjoyed themselves. Discuss whether they are different to the things you like doing. What changes have there been in what children wear?
