Large, soft-bodied insects with 2 pairs of large wings. Wingspans vary from 20-100mm and have many cross-veins. Adults are very similar to lacewings, except the veins in their wings do not branch at the edges. Larvae are aquatic and live from 1 to 5 years. Larvae eat other aquatic insects. Adults rarely feed and are short-lived. Predators include spiders, fish, frogs and tortoises
