Coronation medal of King George IV, 1821

This is an unofficial commemorative medal struck on the occasion of the coronation of King George IV in 1821. The official medals were thrown to the crowds while the invited guests dined after the coronation. This medal was sold to a member of the public and would have been worn during the celebrations.

Obverse – A bust of George IV facing left by the artist T. Webb. Around this is the legend KING GEORGE IV ASCENDED THE BRITISH THRONE JAN 29 1820

Reverse – At the centre is a crown surrounded by roses, thistles and shamrocks on a plinth. Above the crown is the legend KING GEORGE IV, with CROWNED JULY 19 1821 completed on the plinth.
