Coronation medal of King William IV, 1831

This is an example of the official gold medal struck for distribution and sale on the occasion of the coronation of King William IV. It is one of those given by the King to his official guests. Melbourne was first settled during the reign of William IV, with both King and William Streets being named after him.

Obverse – Bare head of William IV by William Wyon. Around the head is the legend WILLIAM THE FOURTH CROWNED SEP: 8 1831.

Reverse – Head of Adelaide facing right wearing a tiara, also by William Wyon. Around it is the legend ADELAIDE QUEEN CONSORT CROWNED SEP: 8 1831.
