Fighting to survive (1784–1850)

The arrival of the First Fleet in New South Wales marked the beginning of devastating change for the lives of Aboriginal people. This medal and coin sequence spans the period from 1788 to the announcement of Victoria's separation in 1850. During this time, the Port Phillip District was part of the British colony of New South Wales and this is reflected in the imagery on the coins and medals. Queen Victoria, after whom the State is named, assumed the throne in 1837. An official coronation medal commemorates the event.
