Arms Collection

The Arms Collection comprises a broad range of weapons and associated items, including pistols, muskets, rifles, machine guns, swords, knives, bayonets, artillery pieces and armour. Most date from the 18th to 20th centuries.

The collection is useful for understanding military, social and political history, the technical development of firearms, and the aesthetics of decoration and craftsmanship demonstrated in many of its items. Established in 1860 and now comprising nearly 4000 items, it is one of the museum’s oldest and most extensive collections.
