Archaeology Collection

Museum Victoria’s Archaeology Collection comprises well in excess of 100 000 objects, with the major component being Australian Indigenous materials sourced to south eastern Australia.

The collection includes Indigenous archaeological assemblages and objects of state and national significance.

Most have been acquired from private donors, but the museum’s role as the legislated repository for archaeological relics in Victoria has also seen it accumulate professionally excavated archaeological assemblages and occasional finds presented to it by the general public.

Being also international in scope, the collection contains small subcollections from Old and New World sites.
