The Mollusc Collection encompasses the classes Gastropoda (snails and slugs), Cephalopoda (octopuses and relatives), Bivalves (clams and relatives), Polyplacophora (chitons), Scaphopoda (tusk shells) and Aplacophora (shell-less molluscs). It includes both wet and dry collections.
Consisting of about 850 000 specimen lots, the major proportion of this collection is shelled molluscs but it also includes a large world-class cephalopod collection. It includes significant and valuable material from throughout Australia, Antarctica and the Indo-Pacific region, including one of the largest cephalopod collections in the world.
The collection also includes substantial holdings of type material covering approximately 701 species. All primary type (Holotype, Syntype, Neotype, Lectotype) specimens are on the data base, have been image captured and can be found using OZCAM.
