Tiny badges like these were a potent symbol of Australia in the decades following Federation. The first national Wattle Day was held on 1 September 1910, prompted by Victorian naturalist A.J. Campbell and the Australian Natives’ Association. By World War I Wattle Day badges and sprigs were used to raise money for organisations such as the Red Cross.
The influence of Wattle Day waned as the 20th century progressed, but in 1992 the Governor-General declared 1 September National Wattle Day.
