- Statement Of Significance:
- The scrip is significant as an example of the extensive land speculation that occurred in Melbourne in the 1880s.
The society was one of several financial institutions controlled by Matthew Davies, parliamentary member for St Kilda and then Toorak. Davies' financial empire collapsed in the early 1890s, leaving him bankrupt and investors with losses of over 4 million pounds. The society's imposing building, erected in 1888, still stands at the corner of Elizabeth and Little Collins Streets.
