The Meritorious Service Medal was originally a long service medal but in October 1916 and January 1917 it was modified to become an immediate award for individual acts of gallantry or life saving not in the presence of the enemy. - Description:
- A silver medal with mount and small piece of ribbon. The obverse features a bust of King George V facing left wearing Field Marshal's uniform; around, GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:; the artist's initials B.M. (Bertram MacKennal) are on the truncation. The reverse has the words: FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE in three lines within a laurel wreath and below a crown. The edge impressed in block capitals: 452 S. SJT: L. TWEEDIE. H.Q. 4 / AUST: INF: BDE:
