- This letter of sympathy was one of a large number sent to his trainer and part owner Harry Telford after Phar Lap died in April, 1932. The Telford family retained the letters, and they were donated to the museum in the 1990s.

| Inscriptions: | Text: Dear Harry/I suppose you have/been inundated with letters of sympathy/over the death of Phar Lap. I do/not know whether you will/appreciate my sympathy but I feel/that I must drop you a line and/offer it. Perhaps I can sympathise/with you more deeply that a/majority of others as only a few/months ago I suffered a terrible/loss myself in the death of my/little boy Alec. he died after/an operation for appendicitis/the operation so the doctor said/was successful and we thought/everything was O.K. when the rang/us up from the hospital to say he/was gone. It has been a terrible/blow to my wif & myself; however I/commenced by offering sympathy to you &/not intending to burden you with my own/troubles. I saw sometime ago where young/Harry has now a sister to keep him/company, that is great for him, there is/no doubt that a boy and girl make/an ideal family./What a tragedy Phar Laps death was! It/must have been a terrible shock for you/besides being a tremendous financial/loss. I hope that you have a few horses/in the stables that will speedily/compensate in some way for the/great loss you have suffered. |
