Receipt - Department of Defence, Pay & Deferred Pay of Deceased Soldier, 13 Jul 1920 Reg. No: HT 13579
- Blue payee's copy of receipt from the Department of Defence regarding the pay of Private Kemp, killed in action in Western Europe on 21 September 1917. The receipt was apparently issued on 13 July 1920, and includes amounts 'Paid under Allotment', 'Paid Separation Allowance', 'Debit as per Statement of Account from Abroad' and 'Balance Due'. The total debits come to £162/1/8, with just £6 payable to Private Kemp's widow, Annie Josephine Kemp.
A hand-written copy of the same calculations, HT 13578, also a payee's copy, is apparently dated 15 August 1920.
Annie struggled financially after the loss of her husband, raising two children on her own.
