My husband daughter and I sailed on the Ellinis in March 1972 as 10pound poms and settled 80kms from Sydney. I've often wondered about the passengers we met on board and did they settle etc

I also was a ten pound Pom, sailing to Australia in 1970. There were four of us in the cabin and in 2010, three of us had a reunion in Sydney - on the Harbour. The fourth cabin member lives in Canada and we hope to catch up when she comes out in the next couple of years.

My husband, baby daughter and I sailed from Southampton to Sydney in 1971. I will never forget the voyage. After leaving Capetown we hit the most dreadful storm and rough seas. It was really exciting but many people were sea sick and no one was allowed on the decks for nearly a week. I loved the voyage and met many lovely people all with different reasons for being on the ship. A Very interesting and great time in my life.

My parents, sister and myself sailed on the Ellinis in1971 and can relate to Anne Masons story of the frightening storm after leaving Capetown, when we arrived at Fremantle a large part of the hull was damaged and migrants lost luggage etc, i will never forget one stormy night at dinner when we had to hold onto a bar under the dining table to stop from sliding away on our chairs! One passenger was very unlucky and he flew off in his chair across the chair across th dining hall when the rudders were shaking violently and his lung was punctured ..Before the storm it was a very beautifull journey and i still have the sepia paper book i wrote about the voyage age 13.

Hi Andrew, I also sailed on Ellinis in 1974. I did the Circle the Pacific voyage which departed from Sydney on Feb 4th. My many photos of the cruise have faded somewhat over the years but not so my happy memories.

I sailed to Australia at the age of 9 aboard the Ellinis. We first docked at Fremantle in March 1973. One of my strongest memories is of having to eat in a separate dining room from my parents & the dreadful food. Every child on the ship had food poisoning my own bout occurred during the night before we disembarked in Sydney. I was so ill & weak that my Dad had to carry me off the ship so my memories of arriving in our new country is mainly of the view of the ceiling of the customs hall. Does anyone else remember that voyage?

Hi roger males...I too was on that voyage, settled in perth. Got vey seasick after leaving uk. Better by las palmas though..I was 13 at the time. Great memories

Left Southampton Dec 2 1965 and arrived Jan 1 1966 aboard the Ellinis. I remembered being separated from my parents at eating times. We were lucky, our cabin was above water level, a positive especially when going through rough seas like the Great Australian Bight...very rough. I remember being the last ship down the Suez Canal before it was closed and seeing the British troops in Aden.

Sailed from Australia to Southampton on this lovely ship in about 1973 my Dad told me it was supposed to be her last voyage but I see above that she was actually scrapped in 1986. It's sad that we don't make these sort of voyages now - planes are quick, but not nearly so nice.

I was 12 when My family left Southampton in December '72 arriving to settle in New-Zealand end of January '73. Have lots of lovely memories of the Ellinis and still have postcards and boarding passes.

November 1971 - December 1971 Southampton to Melbourne, 4 weeks of great fun for me as a 10 year old but my 13 year old brother had a much worse time of it being in hospital with asthma for most of the Cape Town to Fremantle leg.
Richard Martin Posted on 23 Mar 2013 6:18 PM
November 1971 - December 1971: I was a full-fare paying passenger. I sailed from Rotterdam via Bremerhaven, Southampton, Las Palmas, Capetown, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne to Sydney. I had a Lanai Cabin on the Main Deck and the bathroom was equipped with a proper bath. Good weather was experienced throughout the voyage. I recall that late afternoon, every day, the ship’s garbage was dumped from the stern. Overall it was agood experience and a grat way to travel

My family left Southampton Oct 1972 bound for Australia, via Las Palmas and Capetown. What a great trip, my mum and dad thought this would be our last vacation for a while as it would be hard work setting up in OZ, so we had a great time, until we left Cape Town, the seas we so rough all the way to Fremantle, but a great adventure
Joy Coey Posted on 07 Apr 2013 6:39 PM
My family sailed from Southampton on 6/1/71 arriving 6/2/71 in Sydney then took the 'overnight express' train (a rattler) to Brisbane arriving 7/2/71. I was only 10 but from what I remember it was a fabulous trip.

We, my father, mother and 5 children, left Sydney in, I think, late May 1964 to return 6 weeks later to Rotterdam. My parents and eldest brother had left Holland in December 1955 for Sydney.

Our family sailed March 1973 from Southampton to Sydney. My brother was quite sick and lost a lot of weight, we struggled with the food and eating separately from our parents. I remember our ship coming to the aid of an injured sailor on another boat. The trip was quite an adventure for a 11 year old.
