Summary:: Photograph of J.H. Close taken by Frank Hurley on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. Part of a collection of Antarctic exploration documents and photographs.

Close worked as an Assistant Collector on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. He was born in Sydney, served in Rhodesia during the South African War and then was a teacher of physical culture at Sydney before participating in the Expedition. He was a member of the Main Base Party (Adelie Land) and several sledging parties, the Close Islands at the entrance to Buchanan Bay are named after him.

Frank Hurley was an Australian photographer, filmmaker and adventurer. He was the official photographer on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914 and The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-17, and served as an official photographer with Australian forces during both world wars.
