Health Certificate - Orient Line, Naples, 1929 Document Reg. No: HT 17129

This aged small cream paper is the Orient Line Holme and Co. Napoli document that was required for Stanio Fancoff's 1929 immigration to Australia. Complete with Stanio's photograph, this paper is a statement regarding vaccinations and sanitory records and has been signed by Haguo F. Fengoff. Along with many other documents, these papers were held and required by Stanio when he departed for Australia from the port of Naples in 1929.

Stanio Ivanoff Fancoff was born in 1908 in Bojentsi, a small village in Bulgaria. At age 11, Stanio left home to learn the shoemaking trade. In 1929, he immigrated to Melbourne, settled in Fitzroy and began to work for the V.G. Zemancheff & Sons basket shoe factory in South Melbourne. In1936, he married Dorotea Georgi Touzou who had recently arrived in Australia. Around this time, Stanio set up his own shoemaking business from home, with Georgi, her cousin and sister weaving the shoes which he then assembled. Select shoe samples were then taken to Sydney and Tasmania for sale. In 1942, Georgi and Stanio moved to Broken Hill for Georgi's health; there daughter Nancy was born and Stanio set up a shoe shop/factory. In 1945, Georgi died and by 1950 Stanio and Nancy had moved to Adelaide where he again opened a shoemaking business and shop. He passed away in 1978, having been in the shoemaking business for 59 years. This collection documents his migration and working life experiences.
This cream paper has a central crease line, suggesting it to be a fold line. Attached in the lower left hand quadrant is a photograph of a young looking Stanio Fancoff. In the upper left quadrant, the document's origin "ORIENT LINE HOLME AND CO. NAPOLI" while, in the upper right is stamped the attending doctor, 'Dott. Pietro Mazzaccara" (Dr. Peter Mazzaccara). Centered within the twofold document are, the signature of Haguo F. Fengoff-, and the prompts "in partenza col. P.fo" (in departure with P.fo), and underneath this "ha espletate le operazioni sanitarie indicate, Napoli" (it has carried out the indicated sanitary operations, Napoli), in which a black smudged stamp appears adjacent. In the lower right quadrant, an official oval shaped stamp bearing "Bollo della Societa"(Stamp of the Society). On the document's reverse, centrally positioned with terms and their replies are 'Disenfezione Fmualy" (Disinfection Fmualy); "Bagno Franesco Marino" (I Bath Franesco Marino); "Vaccinazione" (Vaccination) and Il MEDICO DELLA COMPAGNIA (The Doctor of the Company), across which is stamped Dott. Pietro Mazzacarra (Dr. Peter Mazzacarra). In the lower left quadrant, a round stamp with the words R. Ispettorato Dell Emigrazione/ Nel Porto Di Napoli/ Ispezione Sanitaria ( R. Dell Inspector Immigration/ In the Port of Napoli/Sanitary Inspection appears and adjacent in the lower right quadrant is a stamp signature by the "Visto al controllo" (Approval to the Control).
