Passport - Issued to John William Gordon-Kirkby, by Consul General of Tangier, 4 Jul 1959 Document Reg. No: HT 1004

British Passport issued to John William Gordon-Kirkby by the Consul General of Tangier for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on 4 July 1959. John was born in Gibraltar on 26 August 1936. His parents were living in La Linea, Spain at the time. In 1939 they moved to Morocco and were trapped there when war broke out, following World War II they remained in Morocco. Following his father's death in 1959 John decided to migrate to Australia. In order to qualify for assisted passage he had to live in the UK for six months but his application was rushed through due to being sponsored by an Australian couple who he had met while they were holidaying in Morocco. He arrived in Australia on 26 November 1961 and as was standard practice, his passport was taken in exchange for an identity document in order to assure he remained in Australia for the minimum 2 years. At the end of the two year period the passport was returned.
Black covered passport with United Kingdom Coat of Arms in gold on the cover. The inside of the passport contains personal details, immigration stamps and a photograph of the holder.

A typographical error no doubt,but I was born on 26 August 1936 not 31st !
My Australian sponsors were Les and Lita Shanley both Australian born ,then living in Moorabbin Victoria. Les Shanley had recently been an Australian Public Servant working with The Customs Department in what is now the Immigration Museum. I met them in Morocco on their holiday to Europe and a few days in Tangier.
