Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) spent thirty years in Africa as a missionary and explorer. He was the first European to cross Africa and to find Victoria Falls.

Livingstone met Queen Victoria on 13 February 1858 when he had returned to the United Kingdom for a little over a year from December 1856 to March 1858. It is said that Livingstone told Her Majesty that he would now be able to say to the natives that he had seen his chief, his not having done so before having been surprise to the African children. He also stated that they were in the habit of enquiring whether his chief were wealthy; and that when he assured them that she was very wealthy, they would ask how many cows she had got, at which the Queen is reported to have laughed heartily.
