Statement Of Significance:
The significance of this book 'Australia's Coloured Minority: Its Place in the Community' lies in Neville's articulation of the belief that assimilation of Aboriginal people of mixed descent could only occur through 'breeding out the colour'. Neville was Chief Protector of Aborigines in Western Australia from 1915 to 1936 and commissioner for native affairs from 1936 until his retirement in 1940. The book was written during his retirement and published in 1947. The book vividly illustrates his views through a number of photographs showing a progression from full blood Aboriginal to mixed to white Australian and through a systematic social Darwinist and eugenics argument in favour of assimilating Aboriginals of mixed descent into white Australian society.
