The D.Y. Kelly Farriers was a family business, they are listed in the Sands and McDougall Directories from 1895 and 1896 at both 412 High St and 54 Camden St, St. Kilda. The Camden St business was not listed in 1897. They shod the horses for the Earl of Hopetoun who was Governor of Victoria from November 1889 - July 1895, and Lord Brassey, the Governor of Victoria from October 1895 - March 1900, and had official patronage. They were in business from the late 19th Century to about 1930. Daniel Yates Kelly owned the business.

The photograph was taken by professional photographer Alfred Wall who worked for the photography firm Wall Brothers. They were located in three different premises in St Kilda between 1891 to 1897.
