Description Of Content:: Children performing en masse maypole routine in a stadium, with spectators in stands.

This photograph shows the formation of maypoles in Melbourne Cricket Ground, 1954. The contributor's mother was one of the teachers in this pageant of Melbourne school children for the Queen's Visit. The Queen drove around the perimeter of the Melbourne Cricket Ground whilst the children performed their maypole routine.

I was a participant in this event and the date was March 4th 1954.

Hi Walter, thanks for informing us of the correct dates of this event. We have had a look at the history of the Queen’s visits to Melbourne and you are right, this event did take place in 1954. I was also a participant in this event - seem to recall that we were all dressed in pink.

I participated in this event at the MCG and danced the Maypole, still have my photo in my white dress.
