Digital Photograph - Man Leaning on Luggage Trunk, Awaiting Detention as Enemy Alien, 1939 Reg. No: MM 110903
- Description Of Content:
- Man in suit and hat, leaning on his luggage trunk, with other cases around him. He is in a park.
This photograph shows Henrick Von Sonnewald arriving in Australia from Germany in September 1939. World War II broke out almost as soon as Henrick arrived in Australia. His widow remembers: 'He literally got off the boat and was whisked off to the internment camp in Tatura for the next five years. He had gotten his luggage off the boat and was waiting to be arrested as an enemy alien. Henrick was officially travelling on business. He had said to his family that he wanted to get away from Germany and as far from the Nazi's as possible. His uncle gave him a job to represent his precision machine factory around the world.'
