Beanie - HELP, Helping the Endangered Leadbeater's Possum, 2009 Object Reg. No: HT 25906

Beanie was produced by Parks Victoria in July 2009 to be given to volunteers in the Leadbeater's Possum supplementary feeding program. The February 2009 Black Saturday bushfires destroyed 43% of the Leadbeater's Possum habitat, an endangered species and the faunal emblem of Victoria.

Soon after Ellie and Mollie Travica from Emerald, Elly Robertson from Kallista and Emma Falkenberg from Berwick, Year 7 students of Beaconhills College, Berwick, joined together to form HELP, Helping the Endangered Leadbeater's Possum. Together they began a program of learning more about the Leadbeater's Possum, raising the public's awareness of the possum's plight and raising funds for much needed nesting boxes made of recycled plastic.

HELP has participated in planting more than 100 trees at Yellingbo Reserve to boost the possums habitat, have appeared in television programs and had stories published in the print media and on websites promoting the need to fund nesting boxes. Over $11,500 has been raised through selling wrist bands and from donations. HELP persuaded the Healesville Sanctuary to include the possum in their school holiday program who also printed 5,000 brochures featuring the possum. HELP are in the process of encouraging the Victorian State Government to feature the possum on motor vehicle registration stickers, and Cadbury to include the possum in their Furry Friends range to assist in raising the possum's profile.
