Lantern Slides - Series, 'John Gilpin', circa 1850-1880 Reg. No: MM 109833
- Set of 12 lantern slides depicting the story of John Gilpin. Set in England, the poem "The Diverting History of John Gilpin; showing how he went farther than he intended, and came safe home again" was written by William Cowper and first published in 1782.
This set of lantern slides are part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
- Standard format (3¼ x 3¼ inch square) lantern slide, comprising hand coloured print on glass with black paper edging under a protective glass cover plate.
- Description Of Content:
- Hand coloured image of man and woman seated at a table. Both are wearing 18th century dress. The man is smoking a long pipe.
