Lantern Slide - Soldiers Celebrating, 1885-1920 Reg. No: MM 111642
- Lantern slide showing two groups of soldiers in different uniforms. It may pre-date World War I.
The figures on the right are probably Australian AIF, based partly on the lead figure who seems to be holding a slouch hat in his left hand (the slouch hat was already in use by Australian Forces from the mid-1880s). The figures in the back in white pants and red tunics appear to be wearing the uniform of the Queen's Life Guard, the mounted guard at the entrance to Horse Guard (the Horse Guard being the official main entrance to both St James' Palace and Buckingham). The other men with the dark uniform and yellow pant stripe, and the single man in the front in the red tunic, are wearing unidentified uniforms - perhaps the latter is a member of the Royal Marines, while the dark blue uniforms would seem to point to a Naval uniform.
Part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
- Lantern slide featuring a colour image printed on glass with black paper edging. A second piece of glass is attached to protect the printed image.
- Description Of Content:
- Coloured drawing depicting a group of soldiers and officials. The soldiers on the right are in khaki, with puttees, spurs, white belts and gun holsters; they wave slouch hats above their heads as if in celebration. The men on the left, facing them, are dressed in grey-blue coats with yellow striped trousers and peaked caps, except a man with red jacket in the foreground. In the background is a band (or similar) that appear to wear shorts and have bare thighs. Two-storey buildings in the background could be barracks.
