Lantern Slide - Soldiers Celebrating, 1885-1920 Image Reg. No: MM 111642

Summary:
Lantern slide showing two groups of soldiers in different uniforms. It may pre-date World War I.

The figures on the right are probably Australian AIF, based partly on the lead figure who seems to be holding a slouch hat in his left hand (the slouch hat was already in use by Australian Forces from the mid-1880s). The figures in the back in white pants and red tunics appear to be wearing the uniform of the Queen's Life Guard, the mounted guard at the entrance to Horse Guard (the Horse Guard being the official main entrance to both St James' Palace and Buckingham). The other men with the dark uniform and yellow pant stripe, and the single man in the front in the red tunic, are wearing unidentified uniforms - perhaps the latter is a member of the Royal Marines, while the dark blue uniforms would seem to point to a Naval uniform.

Part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
