Glass Negative - SY Discovery and Colony of Gentoo Penguins, BANZARE Voyage 2, Antarctica, 1930-1931 Image Reg. No: MM 114907

Glass negative depicting two photographs taken by Eric Douglas showing the ship SY Discovery 1 and a colony of Gentoo penguins. It is one of a number of glass negatives by Eric Douglas and Frank Hurley taken of photographs from Voyage 1 of the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE), 1929-1930.

Eric Douglas was one of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) pilots who participated in BANZARE, 1929-1931. He was also a keen amateur photographer and worked with professional photographer Frank Hurley during both BANZARE voyages.

Eric Douglas is quoted as saying of these two images:
Image 1: 'Very heavy pack ice which is more or less impenetrable. In this view the Discovery I in full sail has been superimposed on the ice so don?t get too alarmed for the safety of the ship'.
Image 2: 'Gentoo penguins, Macquarie Island. Rockeries are situated in the foot hills some distance from the foreshore. Mountain stream connects Rookery to foreshore. Penguins always go by water way to and from Rookery. In this view, penguins are resting on break either, prior going to sea to catch their food or to set out on their return journey to the Rookery. Penguins live on small sea life called 'krill' which is something like a small prawn which is rich in glucose. This is also the food of the whale'.
