Pennant - Princess Alexandra's Visit to Camperdown, Victoria, Sep 1959 Object Reg. No: HT 34120

Souvenir pennant commemorating Princess Alexandra of Kent's visit to Camperdown, Victoria, in September 1959.

Twenty-three year old Princess Alexandra spent just over six weeks in Australia, visiting the ACT, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. While in Victoria, the last leg of her tour, she spent a weekend at 'Talindert', the home of Sir Chester and Lady Manifold in Camperdown. Sir Chester was the president of the Victorian Racing Club. On her departure from Camperdown, 15,000 people lined the streets to wave goodbye; many waving flags like this one.

Princess Alexandra returned to Victoria in 1980 to officially open Centenary Hall, a mirror-glass addition to the Exhibition Building. It was during this visit that she bestowed Royal title on the building, in her capacity as cousin to Queen Elizabeth II.
Triangular fabric, printed in blue, pink and white. A black and white paper photo of Princess Alexandra's head has been glued over an outline of a bust. The pennant is attached to a wooden stick.
