Medal - Jubilee of Queen Victoria, Mount Gambier, Australia, 1887 Numismatics Reg. No: NU 31141

Mount Gambier
Jubilee of Queen Victoria 1887 (AD)
Mint: Stokes & Martin
Other Details: Queen Victoria's 50th Jubile in 1887 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. This medal was one of many issued by local governments to commemorate the occasion. It was issued by the Mount Gambier Town Council, and names William Thurston as Mayor. Mount Gambier is located half way between Adelaide and Victoria, on the coast of South Australia. Stephen George Henty, one of the founders of Portland, was the first European person to see the lakes in the crater of Mount Gambier. His party was followed by many pastoralists and settlers who were attracted to the rich district. In 1854 Hastings Cunningham subdivided a section of 77 acres to form Gambiertown (later Mount Gambier). Soon Government agencies formalized the subdivision and and private landholders began to settle. The first Town Council was formed in 1876, and in 1954 Mount Gambier was declared a City.
