- This postcard was created as a souvenir of Federation. It is postmarked Melbourne, and dated Friday 22 February.
Australia became a nation when the six self-governing colonies united in 1901. The Commonwealth of Australia was inaugurated on 1 January 1901 in Centennial Park, Sydney. In March, elections were held for the new Federal Parliament, and in May the celebrations focused on Melbourne where the first Federal Parliament was opened in the Royal Exhibition Building. - Description:
- Postcard with Melbourne postmark. Postcard has printed image of the federation crest with portrait roundels of Queen Victoria, the Duke of Cornwall and York and Lord Hopetoun. There is a handwritten message on one side and an address on the other.
